Vuelvo con un tomate feísimo!!! (I'm back with an ugly tomato)

Hola amigos!! Por fin vuelvo a actualizar el blog. Mis obligaciones familiares (he sido padre por segunda vez este agosto pasado) requerían de mi tiempo y no encontraba el momento para crear nuevas entradas. Ahora ya se han regularizado un poco las cosas y me da tiempo a escribir algo.
Hi friends I finaly had a moment to update the blog. My family dutys require a lot of time (father for second time). NOw things have settled down and I can take back again th blog and start writing again.

Vuelvo a enseñaros cosas de mi huerto y para ser fiel a lo que escribí, lo primero que quiero mostraros es un ejemplar de tomate que perfectamente podría ganar el premio del concurso de tomates feos del que os hablé hace tiempo. Bueno, ni contaros el sabor que tenía, exquisito!!! Con esto ya tenemos la prueba empírica de que los tomates que vemos en el super no están solos en el mundo, que tienen hermanos feos, feísimos, pero deliciosos al paladar.
Getting back to what I wrote in a previous entrance about the ugliest tomato contest, well, I think these tomatoes could be the winners. Apart from the look of it, the flavour was exquisite, so now we know that the tomatoes that we can find in the supermarket are not alone in the world, the have ugly brothers but so nice.

 

Mini cherry

Esta mañana me he encontrado con este maravilloso mini tomate cherry en la huerta. Me ha parecido tan bonito, que quería mostrároslo. Posteriormente me lo he comido y estaba muy bueno, muy dulce.
Tis morning I've found this marvellous cherry tomato in the vegetable garden. I foud it so beautiful that I wanted to show it to you. After that I ate it and it was so delicious and sweet.

Blog "el comidista"

Dando un repaso a blogs que hablan de huertas o temas relacionados, he encontrado el blog del comidista, escrito por Mikel López Iturriaga. Sobre todo toca temas relacionados con la gastronomía. Lo que más me llamaba la atención es su sección de comidas viejunas, con entrevistas al Melón con Jamón, la tarta Contesa, o el Limón helado entre otros. En sus textos se aprecia un toque de humor y sarcasmo. Pero por lo que quiero recomendar este blog es por esta entrada sobre un concurso de tomates de la variedad marmade, que es una de las que tengo yo plantadas. En este concurso se reivindica la fealdad del tomate por encima de su aspecto. Es una idea buenísima y me gustaría que el espíritu de esta iniciativa no cayera en saco roto. Bueno, ahí lo tenéis, VIVA LA FEALDAD, ARRIBA EL SABOR!!!

Taking a look through internet searching for blogs that talk about vegetable gardens and thigs related to it, I've found one called "el comidista" writen by Mikel Lopez Iturriaga. He mainly talks about gastronomy. The thing that has most caught my attention is his old food section, with interviews to melon with ham, Contesa cake, or the iced lemon amongst others. In his text you can apreciate a touch of humor and sarcasm. But the aim of this entrance is the marmade tomato competition, which is a variety I have planted myself . This competition is about which tomato is the ugliest. I think it's a great idea, so here you have it . ¡¡¡VIVA THE UGLY, GET UP THE FLAVOUR!!!

De la huerta a la mesa (from the vegetable garden to the table)

Ya estamos tomando tomates casi a diario, han salido muy sabrosos y jugosos. Como dice el titulo de esta entrada, pasan directamente de la huerta a la mesa. Esto si que es calidad y no lo que nos venden en los supermercados hoy en día. Estamos muy contentos este año...

We are now eating tomatoes almost every day, they have come up very nice and juicy. As the title says, they have been picked up in the vegetable garden and gone directly to the table. This is quality and not what we buy in the supermarkets nowadays. We are so happy ...

Tomates pepinos y calabacines (Tomatoes, peppers and courgettes)

Como todos los años la primera cosecha se hace esperar (en Guadarrama el clima es frio), así que cuando empezamos a ver los primeros frutos casi formados vemos que el trabajo realizado durante el invierno a merecido la pena. Los primeros pepinos y calabacines ya asoman detrás de sus flores. Las tomateras empiezan a estar cargadas de tomates y sólo habrá que esperar un par de semanas para saborearlos.

As it happens every year the crop takes a bit to turn up (In Guadarrama the weather is slighty cooler), so when we start seeing the first fruits, we know that the hard work in winter has been worth the effort. The first peppers and courgettes are now appearing behind the floewers. Loads of tomatoes are now growing and will be ready in a couple of weeks.

 

Riego automático y acolchado de paja (automatic watering system and straw cushion)

Este año, al principio de la temporada me puse como objetivo instalar riego automático por goteo, pues bien, ya lo tengo. Con la ayuda y supervisión de mi amigo Iván (capataz agrícola y jardinero) he completado la instalación. De esta manera me aseguro de que el huerto y las demás plantas no tengan problemas de agua en estos días tan calurosos, y además esto me va a producir un gran ahorro de agua. Dentro de la idea de que el huerto sea lo más ecológico posible está ese ahorro de agua que proporciona el goteo en el riego, a lo que se suma que el acolchado de paja retiene en gran medida la humedad y evita la evaporación.

This year, I aimed to install an automatic drip watering system. Well, mission accomplished. My friend Ivan helped me to install all the irrigation system. This is going to have the advantage that I wont have to be on top of the vegetable garden all the time in this warmy days and the water saving which is the most important thing. 
Apart from the watering system, the straw cushion helps to avoid the evaporation. 

 

Asi avanza el huerto (making progress)

Así está hoy por hoy el pequeño huerto urbano. Ya hemos recogido bastantes pimientos de padrón y están buenísimos hechos en la sartén con un poco de sal gorda. Los tomates están a punto de recoger, algunos ya tienen el tono anaranjado casi rojo. De momento los primeros en madurar son los cherry a los otros les falta unos dias. Las lechugas aun no han florecido y seguimos deshojando para hacer ensaladas fresquitas.
This is how the vegetable garden looks like right now. We have already collected some padron peppers which are great made in the pan with a little bit of cooking salt. The tomatoes are not ready still, some of them specially the cherry tomatoes are just about turning red. Lettuces have not flowered yet and we are still picking leaves to make nice and fresh salads.

Bancal elevado de fresas (raised strawberry plot)

Os quiero enseñar el último proyecto que he preparado en el huerto. Desde hace tiempo tengo fresas en dos arriates, mezcladas con otras plantas como orégano, hierbabuena, cebollino o albahaca, y debido a que la producción de fresas no era muy grande, he decidido plantarlas en un bancal elevado reservado sólo para ellas. De esta forma, además de dotarlas de mucho más espacio, puedo prepararlas un acolchado de agujas de pino. Este tipo de acolchado es muy ácido, y a la mayoría de las plantas no las beneficia, sin embargo las fresas necesitan este tipo de acidez en el suelo. Las plantas provienen de los arriates, ya que por medio de los estolones por los que se reproducen había podido prepararlas en una maceta aparte.

This is my last proyect in my vegetable garden. I had my strawberrys mixed with other plants like oregano, mint, spring onions and basil. As the outputs were not very good, I've decided to put them by them selves in a raised plot with more space and can add pine leaves to acidify the soil. This kind of soil is bad for other plants but good for strawberrys. As they grow in shoots I could plant some of them in separate pots and then transplant them to this raised plot you can see in the picture.

Aquí os muestro a un pequeño caracol, en el momento de empezar a comerse una hoja de una planta de albahaca recién trasplantada. Así que además de tener que poner trampas con cerveza en las fresas y las lechugas, tengo que ponerlas cerca de la albahaca.
In this pic you can see a snail just about to start eating one of my recently transplanted basil leaves. So appart from putting beer traps arround the strawberrys and lettuces I'll also have to think of putting them here.

Por último aquí tenemos la flor del cebollino, han estado increíbles de color y tamaño y ahora ya empiezan a espigarse.
These are the spring onion flowers. They have been incredibly beautiful but now they are starting to go to seed.

Ya va creciendo poco a poco las plantas que me dio mi amigo Ismael. Se ven los primeros frutos. Ya he probado las espinacas y las lechugas y tienen un sabor excelente. Tendré que esperar unos días mas para recoger los tomates.
My friend Isma's plants are slowly growing. You can see the first fruits. I have already tried the spinach and the lettuces and have an excellent flavour. I'll have to wait a few days to collect the tomatoes.

El huerto de Sejolette

Me han llegado las imágenes del huerto de mi amigo Sejolette, y me han gustado tanto, que he querido compartirlas con todos vosotros. Este huerto está situado en el pueblo del Arenal en el valle del Tietar en Ávila.

Está en la ladera de la montaña, por lo que lo tienen en bancales como en la mayoría de los huertos de la zona. El lugar es de una belleza enorme, y estos bancales han dotado a la zona de una personalidad propia.
I've recieved the pictures from my friend sejolette's vegetable garden and I've liked them so much that I wanted to share them with you. This vegetable garden is located in a village called Arenal in Tietar valey in Avila.
It's in the mountainside, so they are in polots as most vegetable gardens in the area. It's a lovely place.
